100 Point Rating Guide

96-100 Extraordinary A wine of finesse, complexity, and expression. True to variety and region. Perfect balance of flavors with a long finish.
90-95 Excellent True to variety and region, with terrific complexity and balance. While not a wine for the ages, a superior example.
85-89 Good Meets your expectations, with sound flavors and balance. Might have limited complexity or be short on the palate. A sound wine.
80-84 Average Drinkable, might not have as much varietal character. Simple flavors, no flaws, but nothing special.
75-79 Below Average Might contain one flaw, simple straight-forward flavors, off-balance, unpleasant.
60-74 Undrinkable, Flawed Contains significant flaws. Unpleasant, not commercially acceptable.

Wow - after only seeing Italian varietals from MW- I was quite, almost mightily, impressed by the Jacks Ranch Edna Valley 05 - the purety of flavor is certainly the envy of many a Burgundy in the same range- elegant red fruits, sappy spiciness, cherry & the odd hint of cran - beautifully knit together - relatively weightless for a red wine but flavor trumps body. Have had this wine twice - with consistent results , perhaps with only a minor case of disappointment, known as second bottle syndrome...would love to know the clones at play here. Would be very happy to make this. 90+

I loved the nose on this wine. It was well balanced with decent spice on the tip of the tongue. There were lots of little sensations on the palette (tomato, even some mint). And the finish was what you'd expect out of a quality pinot. Highly recommended.

Bold, spicy, and an in-your-face style Pinot. Lovely aromas of strawberry, pepper, cloves...

Structured, acidic and balanced tannic mouthfeel, although a bit tart. Some cherries and blueberries on the mid-palate.

Quite a finish, don't wait for it to end because it won't.

Would pair well w/ heavy meats, aka this is not your grandma's pinot. This was the 05 so could prbly benefit from an hour in the decanter.

Our local Trader Joe's salesmen rec'd this, and for a $19 pinot, this was pretty damn good.

I'm reluctantly re-reviewing this wine. I've now had the pleasure of tasting 3 different bottles.

I strongly believe that the first bottle i had truly was an excellent (90+) point pinot. Upon tasting the 2nd bottle, I re-read my tasting notes and have convinced myself (tho not necessarily others) that the first bottle was clearly superior.

I was so confused about this I bought a 3rd bottle later and tasted it as well ... it ranked with the 2nd bottle. So my new update on this bottle is that it's a strong lovely pinot, but not as earth shattering as i felt before.
