2005 Blankiet Estate Paradise Hills Vineyard Merlot - Oakville
This wine comes from a tiny hillside vineyard in Oakville, planted with Chateau Petrus Clone by the great Jim Barbour, managed by the phenomenal David Abreu, and made into wine by no less than Helen Turley.
With a pedigree like that, I had extremely high expectations for all the wines, and yet was somehow even more impressed than I expected when I actually tasted them.
This wine is dark-ruby hued and possesses hedonistic aromas of chocolate, creme de cassis, and kirsch-soaked cherries. The wine is amazingly soft, deep, and voluptuous with a remarkable range of dark-fruit flavors intermixed with spices. The wine is totaly smooth and velvety on the palate with no hard edges and an inviting melted chocolate like texture. Buy this and drink it, it's a benchmark. If you can actually get your hands on multiple bottles, put some away. This should last 15 years or more in a good cellar.
Blankiet wines are mailing list only, and the waiting list is closed, however a skilled merchant may be able to find a few bottles for you.
