$8.95 at Bayside Market
I knew this wine wasn't going to be as good as I remembered as soon as I opened the bottle. Even after many swirls, it didn't have any of the plumy smell I associate with Australian Syrah. Blindfolded, I could have said it was alcohol, but not much else. The taste continued the same "yup, there's something in this glass" experience. Penfolds makes many other blends. I recommend you try one of them instead.

$7.99 at Trader Joe's
Along with its sister Big House Red, this is what I would call a functional wine. It's more interesting than you'd expect for the price, but is best paired with simple fish and chicken dishes. The finish is a little sour for my taste (I prefer a floral undertone). It holds its flavor for two or three days after opening, so for the casual wine drinker it's a good buy.

Along with its sister Big House White, this is what I would call a functional wine. It's nicely balanced with a pleasant mouth feel (although I have had a few bottles that had a slightly harsh final note). It also doesn't deteriorate for two or three days. So if you are a casual wine drinker who just wants a decent glass of wine with dinner, this is a fine choice.

$18.00 at Arlequin Wine Merchant
I'm still learning my way around South African wine and had an opportunity to try Stark Pinotage at a tasting at Arlequin. It has much of the flexibility I like about pinot noir, but it's spicier and has more body. It pairs well with curry, stew, and even chili.

$19.00 at Safeway
Usually a bottle labeled simply "red wine" makes me think of something that goes well with spaghetti, but Sienna is one of the best full bodied reds I've tried for the money. It's a blend of Sangiovese, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, so it's wonderfully complex with a smooth finish. If you like Tuscan-style wines that go easy on the tannin, give this wine a try.

I'd been looking for an inexpensive sparkling wine that was truly dry and clean. Rotari fits the bill. It's 90% chardonnay and 10% pinot noir so it's food friendly as well as being delicious on its own.

$21.00 at Cost Plus World Market
I first tasted this wine in the early 1990s and thought it was extraordinary. Everything it says on the label about it having layers of floral, tropical, and spicy flavors is absolutely true. It holds up well with complex dishes and is particularly good with those tricky sweet and hot combinations. It also complements the basics like roast chicken. Every year I worry that they won't be able to do it again, but so far the quality has endured.

This has become my "house white" ; perfect for watching the fog roll in on warm summer evenings. It's well balanced with a floral undertone and just a touch of sweetness at the finish. It also holds up well with lighter dishes. Great bang for the buck.
