Mar 16, 2010Romariz, 1963

1963 Romariz 'Colheita' Port.

A medium amber color with a rich nose of toasted black walnuts and fresh figs. Very full bodied and powerful with flavors of dried dates, dried figs, toasted almonds and caramel toffee. A delight for the senses without a doubt.

Mar 16, 2010Wolfberger Alsace Gewurztraminer, 2000

Delicate aromas of rose oil and citrus combine on the nose before a heady, dense, spicy full bodied palate. The wine stays true through it's long, luscious, spicy finish. An archtypal Alsace Gewurztraminer.

Mar 16, 2010Finca Sobreno Seleccion Especial Toro, 1999

This wine is a blockbuster with loads of dark, ripe fruit and a heavy dose of American oak. Succulent and toasty through the long finish the wine stays fresh and balanced.

Mar 16, 2010Swanson Alexis Red Wine Oakville, 2000

Comprised of mostly cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah the 2000 Swanson Alexis is a deeply colored, sweetly perfumed wine briming with blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry fruit touched with mocha and framed by soft, polished tannins. It should continue to age well.

Mar 16, 2010, 1999

From the red volcanic soils of the 'spice garden' vineyard located in the village of Urzig this is a deep, syrupy wine which shows spicy floral notes woven throughout a soft, seamless body, and very polished finish.

Mar 16, 2010Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett, 2002

Peachy and extroverted, but still delicate and focused. Very light, nearly weightless with unctuous acidity. The wine finishes with a burst of lush melon & tangerine. 7.5% alcohol.

Mar 16, 2010Dr. Loosen Riesling Blue Slate, 2002

A great example of Q.B.R. from the Loosen Estate the 2002 Blue Slate is pale in color with aromas of white oeach and delicate floral aromas (lime and orange blossom). The wine is pungent on the nose and has pronounced acidity on the palate with a fine minerality and persistence. At only 8% alcohol it is very refreshing.

Mar 16, 2010St. Damien Gigondas Vieilles Vignes, 2000

Full ruby colored with peppery black and red fruits swiming in glycerin and spice. Remarkable for it's texture this wine really oozes across the palate.

Mar 16, 2010Voss Botrytis Sauvignon Blanc Semillion, 2000

Voss's answer to the wines of Sauternes and Monbazillac is this delightful blend of late harvest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillion which has been infected with Botrytis or 'noble rot'. The wine is deep golden and loaded with tropical fruit. technical releases indicate the wine was treated to 14 months in ne French Oak, though it's hard to tell based on the sample due to it's extroverted, fruit driven personality. Quite delicious on a summer afternoon or for dessert.

Mar 16, 2010Yalumba The Signature, 1998

One of Australia's greatest 'cult wines' The 1998 Signature is a tour de force of the sheer power and voluptuosity of the 1998 vintage. The wine is a beautiful full ruby hue with ripe rich aromas of black cherry, cassis, and blueberry fruit. On the palate the wine is firm and muscular though has tons more fruit once it emerges from the heaping stack of intricately woven tannins that ensure this wine will continue to improve for 20 years or more. Hard to buy a better wine than this, it's not easy to find this one either, only 25 6-packs were imported into the United States.

Mar 16, 2010Vasse Felix Margaret River Shiraz, 2000

Opaque, saturated purple in color with a ripe, rich nose of dark fruit and spice cake. The wine is surprisingly deep on the palate, with a very full body, more spice, and velvety tannins.

Mar 16, 2010Yalumba Cabernet Sauvignon The Menzies, 1998

Named for Sir Robert Menzies, former Prime Minister of Australia, Yalumba's Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is built for power with ample, muscular cherry and currant fruit framed by lavish vanilla-oakiness. On the palate the wine is more delicate with considerable flavor and fine soft tannins.

Mar 16, 2010Vasse Felix 'Margaret River' Chardonnay, 2001

From Australia's westernmost region, the 2001 Vasse Felix Margaret River Chardonnay was fermented 50% in barrel, 50% in stainless steel tanks. The aromas are rich with toasted almonds, peaches, and golden apple. Bright, round, and tangy with a balanced creaminess, spicey notes emerge at the finish.

Mar 16, 2010Caldwell Proprietary Red, 2000

This property is well known as the source of early wines for Jayson Pahlmeyer and Helen Turley. It is located in the Coombesville district and is one of properties leading the way for this newer appellation.

This wine is a refreshingly different blend of approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 20% Syrah. The color is an opaque, purple-blue and the aromas are of blackcurrants and grilled steak. The wine is very full bodied, seamless, and rich yet understated & compelling. Very, very tasty and built to cellar for about 15 years or more thanks to it's beautiful tannin structure.

Mar 16, 2010cbssyn district estat ilslei leap napa singl stag vallei, 2000

The Ilsley family has more than 50 year experience farming in Napa Valley's Stag's Leap District; the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is their inaugural release. Approximately 550 cases were made.

The wine shows deep red cherry and currant fruit with supporting notes of mint intermixed with cassis. The wine is supple, soft and has lots of glycerin lubricating it's way toward the substantial finish where some extra heat emerges. A strong first effort and likely a sign of even better wines to come from the Ilsley estate.

Mar 16, 2010Bonneau Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005

2005 EPOS NAPA VALLEY RED

EPOS, a Latin word, from Greek, for an epic poem or song (i.e. Homer's Odyssey, Virgil's Anead, Vilmiki's Ramayana, et cetera).

Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (around 70%, mostly from Stagecoach Vineyard in St. Helena), the remainder is Petit Verdot and Malbec (both obtained from Dominus). This highly collectible wine is the absolute cream of Napa Valley, and demands drinking and cellaring over the next 15-20 years. Only 1200 bottles were released to the public.

The charter for this wine stipulates that collectors and merchants yield a 50% discount to veterans, clergy, the blind, and selected others, and that the last case be donated to the Napa Valley Veterans Home in Yountville.

Please note: The bottler, Bonneau Wines, LLC, is dumping EPOS (and it's sibling wines 2005 HYDE RANCH CARNEROS Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Malbec Napa Valley) far below market value (and below futures pricing) to avoid paying consulting fees to the wine's creator Josh Pedroli and enologist Randle Johnson. If you're lucky enough to be holding one, you should know this wine is exceedingly valuable, particularly beyond the greater San Francisco Bay Area.

My magnum (one of only eighteen 1500mL bottles crafted) cost me considerably more than $76,000 and over 12 years of labor and intensive study to obtain.

That is the world record price for a new wine, and an all time high for a wine from American soil.

The record setting magnum of EPOS will be donated to NASA or a civilian space carrier for an upcoming landing on the planet Mars.

Mar 16, 2010Clos D'Agon Tinto, 2000

Made by Peter Sissak who also makes Pingus, the 2000 Tinto is huge, and very left bank Bordelais, likely styled after Lafite-Rothschild, of which it is somewhat reminiscent. All of the musscle and tannin conceals a tremendous wealth of fruit, including a splash of syrah which picks up in the midpalate before dovetailing into the long, more Cabernet-like finsih. A formidable wine for deep cellaring this wine should improve for 20 years. Nice job, Mr. Sissak.

Mar 16, 2010Closa Batllet Priorat, 2000

Another beauty from the Priorat from the fantastic 2000 vintage, the Closa Batllet is opaque black-ruby in color with a super saturated, sublimely rich mid palate. Not quite as gushing on the finish as the Roquer de Porrera (reviewed previously, from the same tasting) it shows much of the same balance of massive fruit, compelling richness, and delicate balance required to pull it all together with a graceful finish.

Mar 16, 2010Celler De L'Encastell Roquers De Porrera Priorat, 2000

If you are a fan of wines like Colgin or Bryant Family, or simply wonder what they might taste like go no further than the 2000 Roquers de Porrera Celler De L'Encastell from the Priorat, Spain. While it is made from very old vine, mountain grown Grenache, Carignane, and Merlot it is proportioned very much like a New World Cabernet of mammoth intensity and lavish proportion. Absolutely explosive on the palate and swiming with cassis, baconfat and vanilla the wine stays nearly weightless despite massive richness and show stopping purity. Recomended with aplomb!

Mar 16, 2010Roda I, 1997

Rioja Reserva. Produced only in the best vintages this is the flagship bottling of the estate. It is loaded with ripe cherries and notes of smoky meat, cedar, and graphite, though the texture is more like a Pinot Noir than a Cabernet Sauvignon (it is entirely made from Tempranillo). The wine is on the whole very round with big tannins and a long, complex finish.
An Awesome benchmark for Rioja and Spain in general.

Mar 16, 2010Henriot Brut Vintage, 1995

This wine may be approaching late maturity. Rich and toasty with a moderate mousse, notes of roasted nuts and brioche intermixed with steely cirtus. Full bodied and intense and persistent the flavors continue to keep pumping and are slow to fade.

95% Chardonnay/5% Pinot Blanc. Bright golden with a delectable assortment of melon, figs, and peaches (I know you're in there Pinot Blanc!). Fat and lush fruit gives way to floral and then fine minerality. This wine finishes long and tasty.

Mar 16, 2010chambol minot musigni perrot viell vign, 2001

Another surprisingly dark and Modern Burgogne Rouge from the village of Chambolle Musigny, this one from old vines, shows dark black-ruby color with deeply fruited and spiced flavors. It is complex and seamless with a pronounced earthiness under all the fruit and the famous Chambolle spice which has made this village so famous. I could go on and on about its chocolatey-cassis-dipped goodness, but considering the rarity of the bottling I'll save that for my next opportunity to sip it. Delicious!

Mar 16, 2010Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay Favieres, 2000

Very dark, ripe, and modern with a pure cherry-currant and spice driven nose. The wine unfolds gently on the palate showing no heaviness despite long bands of ripe flavors.

Burgogne Rouge.
