What does it mean when a wine is refered to as fortified?

Wine to which alcohol has been added, like a brandy, which stops the fermentation and makes it more concentrated.

For example:
Maderia
Marsala wine
Vermouth
Sherry

These wines will generally taste sweeter and are usually referred to as "dessert wines" in the US.

Thanks for sharing information. its really nice and mean full. I want to write more but these days I am doing preparation of different online certifications and I found testking guide is the best helping source which is providing 100% authentic material. Examples of fortified wines include ruby, tawny, Late-bottled-vintage- and vintage Ports, Madiera, Vin Santo, some Banyuls and Sherries to name a few. Many are sweet, though not all.

While the addition of fortified spirits (distilled alcohol) concentrates alcohol content, experts are divided as to it's affect on flavor (likely due to the great varieties of these wines and their various ratios of fruit extracts and tannin to alcoholic strength- plus factors like oxidation in the cellar, the use of dried fruit, et cetera).
