About Vinquire

Vinquire.com is a free search engine for wine enthusiasts. With a database of over 1,000,000 wines (and growing), we help users find, review and buy wine online from retailers and wineries throughout the U.S.

At Vinquire, we're dedicated to becoming the #1 wine search engine on the market. We work hard to ensure that with every search, the results are qualified, comprehensive and up-to-date. To do this, we're constantly maintaining current prices via our proprietary crawl technology. Plus, we equip our users with a range of search options to customize their results by type, price and even location. As a result, Vinquire customers spend less time and money looking for wine, and more time enjoying it.

Vinquire.com is also a social networking site where members can rate wine, share opinions, and participate in forums. By creating a free account, Vinquire members have access to view and sort personal wine reviews and tasting notes, manage account information and create a list of favorite retailers to customize their search preferences.

Our philosophy is simple: great wine doesn't have to be hard to find. And at Vinquire, helping you find the wine you love is not only our job, it's our passion.

Founded in 2005, Vinquire is based in San Francisco, CA.

How Vinquire Works

Wine Price Search

Vinquire's search engine is powerful, free, and always displays every search result regardless of site sponsors. We constantly scan thousands of retailers to find our users the best deals and most sought-after wines.

To search for a particular wine, simply enter all or part of a wine name into the search box and click "Search Wines". (You may also include a year and/or size in the main search box.) To further enhance your search experience we offer a "RetailerSelect" option to specify the set of retailers to search. The default is to search all retailers, giving you a comprehensive list of results from all wine retailers and wineries.

If you'd like to narrow the search to those retailers nearest you, select "Local Retailers" from the drop-down box. Then, enter a zip code and a maximum distance to find a list of local retailers offering the wine you've specified. The resulting locations are also charted via Google MapsTM for easy navigation. By selecting a retailer in the list, you can find driving directions, contact information, or a link to the retailer's website.

Additional search filters are also available by clicking on the Advanced Search link. Optional search filters include:

  • RetailerSelect
Specify set of retailers to search: All Retailers, Local Retailers, or My Favorite Retailers
  • Vintage
Enter a year to limit wines results to that vintage only.
  • Size
Use this field to specify a certain size (750 mL, 1.5 L, etc.)
  • Price Range
Enter a minimum and/or maximum price to fine tune results to your budget, or leave empty to see all prices.
  • Search Style
This option specifies the criteria for matching search terms and sorting the results. The default setting, "AND - Price sort", sorts by price and requires that all keyword terms be present in every result (an "AND" style search). If your results are sparse or empty try "OR - Relevancy sort". This option does not require all keyword terms to exist in the resulting wine names, and sorts the wines on the similarity of the wine name to the keyword terms. More Info »

Advanced search operators:

  • Omit specific bottlings or appellations
"Robert Mondavi" -woodbridge   Try this search
The quotes require Robert and Mondavi to be next to each other. The '-' character specifies that no results will contain the word "woodbridge".
  • Combined searches
"charles shaw" OR "strawberry hill"   Try this search
The OR (must be in caps) specifies that results containing "charles shaw" or "strawberry hill" will be shown.
  • Abbreviate wine types for convenience
You can use abbreviations for some common words in the search: cab, zin, sauv blanc, and chard are all synonyms for their longer counterparts.
  • More advanced operators (* and ~)

Find Retailers

Find retailers in your area with our robust retailer search, which provides the ability to search by address proximity and/or retailer name. Retailers that are located within your area are listed in order of proximity and are also charted on Google MapsTM. By selecting a retailer, you'll find driving directions, contact information and a direct link to its website.

Both the retailer search results and the retailer detail pages provide you the ability to "Search Inventory" and, when logged in, "Add Favorite". These handy links allow you to quickly search a specific retailer's inventory for a wine, and store that retailer in your list of Favorite Retailers for future wine searches, respectively.

Top Ranked Wines

Vinquire monitors incoming user reviews and produces real-time listings of top ranked wines. As users review wine on Vinquire.com, our proprietary code calculates a "WineRank" for each wine. The WineRank calculation is based on the average review score, number of reviewers, and quality of reviews, among other factors. Vinquire's WineRanks are never adjusted by anything other than your scores and are not artificially influenced to promote any particular wine.

Our Top Ranked tab defaults to a broad listing of wine across all types/vintages. The wines are sorted on WineRank, with the highest ranked wines at the top. To customize the WineRank listing, simply adjust the following menus at the top of the page to fine tune the results to your own personal preference:

  • Price
Limits results to wines available under this price.
  • Type
Limits to wines of this type.
  • Varietal
Limits to wines of this varietal.
  • My Retailers
Limits to wines available at one or all of your Favorite Retailers.

For example, with these customizable options you can find the top ranked red wines, available at BevMo, for under $20.

User Reviews

Vinquire is one of the few communal wine websites that use the 100 point scale for user-submitted wine reviews. The scale is similar to an A, B, C grading scale, where 90 pts plus is an A, 80 pts plus a B, and so on. Here is a breakdown of Vinquire's wine rating scale:

100 Point Rating Guide

96-100 Extraordinary A wine of finesse, complexity, and expression. True to variety and region. Perfect balance of flavors with a long finish.
90-95 Excellent True to variety and region, with terrific complexity and balance. While not a wine for the ages, a superior example.
85-89 Good Meets your expectations, with sound flavors and balance. Might have limited complexity or be short on the palate. A sound wine.
80-84 Average Drinkable, might not have as much varietal character. Simple flavors, no flaws, but nothing special.
75-79 Below Average Might contain one flaw, simple straight-forward flavors, off-balance, unpleasant.
60-74 Undrinkable, Flawed Contains significant flaws. Unpleasant, not commercially acceptable.
Need some help?

Submitting a wine review is easy. First, go to the Reviews tab and search for the wine you've recently tasted. Once you've found your selection, click on the wine name to go to that wine's detail page. The detail page contains some general statistics on the wine, previous user reviews and forum post activity, as well as a link to "Buy This Wine" (which feeds directly into the wine price search for this specific wine).

The "Review This Wine" link will open up the form to submit your review. The only required field is the wine rating (see above), however, the more information you give, the more useful your reviews will be to other users. Get creative and let your inner critic out, or just simply list some of the flavors or tastes you experienced in the glass. There's no wrong answer here, just an opportunity to share your opinion with other Vinquire users.

Forums

Because Vinquire is also an online wine community, we feature several wine forums on the site. There are a number of general forum topics to choose from, including one dedicated to user feedback. Aside from the general topics, every single wine in our database has a special forum dedicated to it. To access an individual wine's forum, first, find the wine via the Review search, then locate the forum activity near the bottom of that wine's detail page.
